It’s been a short week. It feels like we’re on the cusp of the September storm hitting as people come back from leave. Let’s see.

Alright guv’nor

Published a bit of updated content on the process of becoming a school governor. The person who requested it has been super open minded and receptive, which always feels like a great opportunity. We’re working a form, that we’re going to test with users soon. On a selfish note it’s a chance to try out form design skills from some recent training with Caroline Jarrett.

Forms, forms, forms

On the subject of forms, continuing to put together some guidelines. There are some conversations happening in the organisation about the process of getting a form published. Have been reaching out to other councils, on Slack channels and on Bluesky to hear how others are doing things. People continue to be super helpful and generous over on Bluesky:

James Green: “Questions for local gov legends: What’s the process at your council for building a form? What systems are you using? Have you published form design guidelines anywhere? #LocalGov” — Bluesky (bsky.app)

Who you gonna call?

Did a bit of an audit of our adult social care section, looking at anywhere that displays the main phone number, and what it tells people they can do if they call. Interesting to see how it’s popped up in several places over time, with some inconsistency. Hopefully we can make sense of things and make things as clear as possible for users.

It’s published, now what?

Had some interesting conversations recently about expectations when we redesign some content. And the fact that the number of views isn’t going to just magically go up. Right now, services need to know how to engage with our comms and marketing team. There’s some work happening in that space to make it easier for people to understand how to do that.

Distractions

Listening

Romance by Fontaines D.C. (album)

Triple Seven by Wishy (album)

Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay (album)

Watching

Paralympics opening ceremony was cool!

Starting watching Brassic as it’s on Netflix now. Think I’m enjoying it, but every episode makes you feel tense and on edge.
